Professional bowler Billy Hardwick passes away at 72

Billy Hardwick, a USBC hall of fame member, passed away at age 72 on Saturday, November 16. Billy Hardwick was inducted into the Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Fame in 1977 and then later into the United States Bowling Congress Hall of Fame in 1985. Throughout his career he won a total of 18 PBA Tour titles. He won his first Player of the Year honors in 1963 and was highly successful throughout the 1963 and 1964 seasons. He was the first bowler to complete the PBA’s Triple Crown and only six others have followed him so far in that achievement.

Outside of his professional bowling career Billy Hardwick opened his own bowling center called Billy Hardwick’s All-Star Lanes. The center had 40 lanes, a lounge, a pro shop for bowling supplies, and arcade. This was one of the things that he valued in his life. He spent much of his time at the center in the presence of those who loved the game as much as he did. He will be missed by the entire bowling community.

The cause of death was apparently a heart attack. This iconic player was one of the most decorated professional bowlers to play the game and has doubtlessly inspired many to follow their passion for bowling to follow in his footsteps. It would seem that an appropriate way to remember such a notable player and lover of the sport would be to engage in the pastime that he held so dear and to play a game with those who can appreciate the legacy that he left on the sport.
